About the Society

Established in 1956, the Hawkesbury Historical Society promotes and encourages the study of the history of the Hawkesbury and collects and preserves matter relating to the history of the Hawkesbury.

Membership is open to all residents of the City of Hawkesbury and others who agree with the objects and rules of the Association and who attend a general meeting of the Association.

Since 1962 the Society, in partnership with Hawkesbury City Council and the Hawkesbury Valley Tourist Association, have operated the Hawkesbury Museum and Tourist Information Centre at 7 Thompson Square, Windsor, the home of John Howe. The Museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm. seven days per week.

Discussions with Council are currently underway regarding possible relocation of the Museum to the old hospital site in Macquarie Street, Windsor. Here the Museum would be collocated with an art gallery and new Windsor Library.

The Society meets on the fourth Thursday of February, April, June, August and October at 7.30 pm in the Tebbutt Room of Windsor Library. Visitors are welcome. Guest speakers present topics relevant to the history of the Hawkesbury at each meeting.

Since the early 1980's the Society has conducted an Australia Day Dinner with Special Guest Speaker. The Society also conducts a Xmas in July function and undertakes a number of weekend tours of historic buildings and locations. It is actively involved in Heritage Week each year.

Continuation of an active social programme and guest speakers at all meetings has maintained an increasing level of membership, with 176 members in 1996-97.

[Figures for previous years were 165 members in 1995-96, 145 members in 1994-95, 134 in 1993-94, 126 in 1992-93 and 53 in 1991-92.]
