| Type 2-6-4 Mixed Traffic Side Tank | 21 in Class |
In 1902, owing to the shortage of mineral tank locomotives, six of the A(93)-class tender engines were converted to a new A/E-class. They were fitted with Belpaire boilers and were virtually identical to the E(10)-class except that the original wider spacing of the A(93)-class driving wheels was retained. Eight more conversions were completed in 1909 - 10. In 1911, seven new engines were constructed and added to the class, still preserving the wider wheel spacing of the A(93)-class. In 1924, these 21 locomotives were grouped with the original 12 of the E(10)-class as the new (Z)-class, with which they were pooled in usage.
As more tender locomotives became available for suburban goods traffic, the surplus locomotives of the combined class were scrapped or sold. The eight sold were disposed of as follows:-
No. 2002 to the Public Works Department (P.W.D. 80)
Nos. 2003, 2004 and 2012 to the Australian Iron & Steel Company and subsequently named Wonga Wallaroo and Wombat.
No. 2008 to the Electrolytic Refining & Smelting Company, Port Kembla
No. 2013 to the Widemere Quarry
No. 2014 to Bunnerong Power House and
No. 2031 to Bulli Colliery. P.W.D.
80 was returned to the N.SW. Railways on Ist January, 1949, but retained its P.W.D. number.
Many of the remainder were fitted with electric headlights and cowcatchers on both ends for shuttle services on the Camden, Carlingford, Morpeth, Rogan's Hill and Kurrajong branch lines. Several were used at Port Kembla, being based at the Reid's Hill P.W.D. depot. The last of the class in service was No. 2029 which was retained for working the Moorebank branch from Liverpool. No. 2029 is now preserved by the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum.
